Director of Media Relations
Earlham College, Office of Public Affairs, Richmond, Ind., 2007-present

Responsible for College’s interaction with the national media — including content and story placement (examples 1, 2, 3, 4) — to maximize the College’s national visibility. Devise and execute strategies and identify opportunities for national and regional media attention while overseeing local news coverage.

Compile information, coordinate responses with faculty and administrators, identify potential placements, prepare pitches and news releases for national and regional media, and utilize the best media for distribution, including the public website, and online resources, such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube or other social networking sites.

Consult with the President to coordinate the College’s response to sensitive media inquiries or emergencies. Work with others to coordinate a response to potentially negative coverage.

Member of College’s Emergency Readiness and Response Planning (ERRP) Committee, developing and implementing crisis communications plans in case of a campus-wide or region-wide emergency. Trained in National Incident Management System (NIMS) and serve as de facto Public Information Officer (PIO) in case of emergencies or crises.
